Sharyland ISD Recognizes January as School Board Recognition Month

Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed January as School Board Recognition Month and Sharyland ISD is joining other districts across the state to gratefully acknowledge local trustees’ unfailing commitment to our communities and schools.

Sharyland North Students Make All-Region Band


On Dececember 10, middle school musicians from Roma to PSJA gathered to compete for a spot in the All-Region Bands.  Making the All-Region Band is the highest honor a middle school musician can earn.  Thirty-six students from Sharyland North Junior High earned this privilege.

Lincoln Middle School wins state PE award



McAllen’s Abraham Lincoln Middle School is one of just 10 schools in Texas to win a 2011-12 Level III Exemplary School award from TAHPERD (Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance).


McAllen High Senior earns FFA Lone Star Degree




Amalia Barrera, a senior at McAllen High School, was recognized by the McAllen School Board for her achievements in the Future Farmers Organization of America on Sept. 26. She received the Lone Star Degree in July, 2011 at the FFA State Conference in Lubbock.







Robots Are Taking Over IMAS




McAllen, TX- Robots have found their way into the Rio Grande Valley! The International Museum of Art & Science will be hosting the
traveling exhibit Robots + Us (Robots and Us) beginning Saturday, February 11, 2012 until Sunday, May 27, 2012. Developed by the Science
Museum of Minnesota and currently on a national tour, Robots + Us takes visitors on a journey in which human reality and sci-fi fantasy meet.
Visitors will have the chance to see the world through a robot’s eyes. They will be able to interact with a computer avatar, compete against an
industrial robot arm, chat with a robot in the Cyborg Café, plus, much more hands-on activities!
Susan Zwerling, Director of Education and Public Programs states, “Robots + Us is a fantastically interactive experience that challenges each
one of us to envision a future world and to explore crucial questions such as the role of artificial intelligence, the possibility that machines
could replace humans, or even that cyborgs could be part of a new society.”
IMAS invites the public to their ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at noon in to give welcome to Robots + Us. After the
ceremony the exhibit will be open to the public.
Robots + Us will be on display at IMAS until Sunday, May 27, 2012. Robots + Us will have a special admission fee of $3/Child (4-12 years)

PSJA ISD dedicates Marcia R. Garza Elementary in Alamo

ALAMO – Marcia R. Garza lived a life of service to her family, her students and her community. She served as a teacher, counselor and principal at PSJA ISD for over 30 years, her last 13 years as principal of Garza-Peña Elementary before retiring in 2004. Three years later in 2007 at the age of 56, she passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.




PSJA SCHOOL INDUCTS NATIONAL
ELEMENTARY HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS




PHARR – Fifteen 4th and 5th graders at South Pharr Elementary were inducted as National Elementary Honor Society Members today during a special ceremony at their school. This is the first elementary chapter to open in the area; the closest chapter is in Laredo.

Elementary students use competition projects for community outreach





Some of the Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) Destination ImagiNation (DI) students have elected to try and make a difference in the world around them through their competition projects. They have decided on a projectOUTREACH team challenge. For example, teams from two schools have decided to tackle the issues of diabetes/obesity, and texting behind the wheel. 


New high school option coming in the fall





As Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) eighth graders begin their pre-registration process over the next few weeks, for the jump to high school, they will have a new choice. District officials are planning to kick off a new Early College High School program this fall, beginning with the graduating class of 2016.
