Academy donates 30 bicycles to McAllen school



Academy Sports of McAllen donated 30 bicycles to McAllen’s Thigpen-Zavala Elementary Dec. 16 to promote hard work in the classroom and healthy exercise.
 

Each bicycle went to a top student from each classroom. Standing from left to right are Principal Maria Elva De Leon, Academy Manager Roel Orozco, Academy Store Director Alex Castillo and Academy Administrative Assistant Alma Gonzalez. They represent Store No. 34 in east McAllen.

World Champion Pitcher Visits McAllen Students

Jaime Garcia, pitcher for the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, spoke to students at McAllen’s Theodore Roosevelt Elementary on Wednesday, November 16. He shared a message about working hard to achieve dreams and his experiences growing up in the Valley and playing baseball. Garcia is from Reynosa, Mexico and graduated from high school in the Valley. Garcia, pictured posing with Roosevelt students, won 13 games for the Cardinals this past season. The lefthander also started two games in the World Series (both no-decisions), struck out 10 batters and had an earned-run average of 1.80. The Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in seven games to claim the World Series title.



Elementary donated 100 handmade knitted beanies, fleece blankets  




 
Students from the 21st Century After School Program at Guerra Elementary donated 100 handmade knitted beanies, fleece blankets and scarves to the Vannie E. Cook Children’s Cancer Center in McAllen.
 The elementary students are under the direction of Mr. Rene Hernandez – 21st Century site coordinator.
