McAllen Memorial athlete to participate state track meet



Madeline Kauffman, a junior at McAllen Memorial High School, will compete in the pole vault at the State Track & Field Meet in Austin this weekend. She will compete along with others in Class 5A – the state’s largest classification – at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. She finished second in the Region IV-5A meet April 28 in San Antonio with a vault of 10 feet.
McAllen ISD raises $36,000 to help March for Babies



McAllen ISD raised $36,000 for babies during the March of Dimes campaign this spring. The District had approximately 600 walkers from toddlers to adults participate in the March of Dimes’ annual March for Babies walk April 28, starting from McAllen Municipal Park. This was McAllen’s third year to participate in the March for Babies. Money raised will be used to benefit children born with birth defects.




Grammy nominee works with McAllen High music students



The McAllen High Mariachi Oro students received a Master Class by Grammy-award nominated musician, arranger, and composer José L. Hernández from Los Angeles, Calif. of the world renowned Mariachi Sol de México on March 29. “It was a great honor having him here working with our kids,” McAllen High Mariachi Director Alex Trevino said. 




McAllen High Senior earns FFA Lone Star Degree


 
Amalia Barrera, a senior at McAllen High School, was recognized by the McAllen School Board for her achievements in the Future Farmers Organization of America on Sept. 26. She received the Lone Star Degree in July, 2011 at the FFA State Conference in Lubbock. Some of the criteria for the award includes having been a member at least two years, completion of at least four semesters of Agricultural Science, investing hours in a supervised agricultural program, leadership ability, scholastic record, participation in planning of chapter activities, completion of project shows and conventions. McAllen High Mariachi Concert May 26




Tickets are now on sale for the 4th Annual McAllen High Mariachi Spectacular. The concert will be held on Saturday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) at the James “Nikki” Rowe High School auditorium (2101 N. Ware Rd.). The concert will feature the Award Winning McAllen High Mariachi Oro, the UTPA Mariachi Aztlán, and the Grammy Nominated Mariachi Los Arrieros del Valle. Mr. Alex Trevino is the McAllen High Mariachi Director. Tickets are $5 at Melhart Music Center in McAllen, at McAllen High School’s Bookkeeper office, or from any one of the Mariachi Oro members and parents. Help support this program. McAllen FCCLA student earns state medal



McAllen Memorial senior Maxwell Treu competed in the state FCCLA (Family, Career and
Community Leaders of America) STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) events April 13-14 in Dallas. He took fifth place in Food Innovations. Treu had qualified for state by taking first place in the Regional Competition Feb. 25.
 




McAllen ISD honors AP Scholars and National Hispanic Scholars


McAllen ISD had a record-tying 58 students named as Advanced Placement Scholars and 21 more named National Hispanic Scholars it was announced. Many of them were honored before the McAllen School Board Nov. 28.

Lopez, Luis Angel Luis, Ivan A. Martinez, Sergio Mier, Sarah Jean D. Pineda, Gabrielle Ramirez, Guillermo Rodriguez, Nicole Roque, Jesus E. Ruiz, Jorge L. Saenz, Daniel Silva III, Rocio M. Tueme, Karla D. Vazquez and Arianna Yarritu.

In McAllen ISD, five students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of three or higher on four or more of these exams.
The AP Scholars with Honor include Aurelio M. Leal (McAllen High), Charles D. Rankin (McAllen High), Joshua G. Corso (Memorial), Rebekah R. Figueroa (Memorial) and Amrita R. Kanwar (Memorial).
The AP Scholars with Distinction award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of three or higher on five or more of these exams. McAllen ISD’s seven AP Scholars with Distinction include Brittany S. Harlow (Rowe), Olivia J. Perez (Rowe), Erving Romero (McAllen High), Marcus A. Shimotsu (McAllen High), Madhavi Nambiar (Memorial), Moises I. Olivos Quiroz (Memorial) and Eric Ruiz (Lamar Academy).
National Hispanic Scholars from McAllen High include Alexis Ayala, Manuel Brown, Sara Cantu, Marguerite Flores, Mary Guerra, Ezequiel Juarez and Anthony Salinas. Those from McAllen Memorial include Joseph Cadena, Rebekah Figueroa, Javier Flores, Lauren Galvan, Victoria Hernandez, Chelsea Lyons, Victoria Ochoa, Isabela Pena-Gonzalez, Andrew Rabinovich and Valeria Rodriguez.
