Sharyland High School FCCLA Successful Showing at Regional Meeting

The Sharyland High School Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) attended the Region V Conference, held in Corpus Christi, TX, February 23-25, 2012. The Chapter members were among 1000 delegates attending the three-day conference. The youth developed theme, “Highway to Success” was carried out through different highways of roads through life. The meeting featured a series of specialized leadership tracks and general sessions in which members discovered ways to become actively involved in issues facing today’s youth.
STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) and Proficiency Events are competitive events in which members participated at the region meeting. These events allowed members to showcase their life skills in different areas of competition. Teams that competed and placed were: Marifer Valdez, and Laila Kalaf. Environmental Ambassador 1st place Genoveva Jaimes, Jackie Luke, and Edeliz Perez. Fashion Design 1st place Andrea Perez. Leadership 1st place Evelyn Cantu. National Programs in Action 2nd place Melissa Silva, Ilse Soto, and Jazlyn Oyuela. Parliamentary Procedure 2nd place Maria E. Garza, Myriam Garza, Natalia Gonzalez, Anthony Jimenez, Sylvia Ponce, Marisa Rodriguez, Isaac Rosales, and Carlos Valdez. Teach and Train 2nd place Brenda Guizar.
Leadership Enhancement Opportunities (LEO) Exams and Competitive Events took place on Thursday and Friday 28. Sharyland members earned 20 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 1 bronze. Highest score was made by Marifer Valdez with a score of a 100. Karla Montemayor, Sydney Saenz, and Melissa Silva scored 96 out of a possible 100.
Also, the new officer team for 2012-2013 was elected to carry on the “Highway to Success.” Alexis Montemayor was elected Region V officer and Carlos Cruz elected State Officer.
Sharyland was recognized for contributing articles to TEEN Times and Texas FCCLA Website. Brenda Guizar was recognized as being a member of the Connection Team that did the closing photo slideshow. Sharyland FCCLA was awarded Most Outstanding Project submitted from all other schools that participated.
Honorary Membership was given to Mr. Gerardo Cruz, SHS Counselor and Mrs. Janie Flores, SHS Librarian.
Sharyland High School Proclamation of “FCCLA Week”
Sharyland High School members of the Texas association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will join more than 195,000 members in celebrating National FCCLA Week February 12-18, 2012. This year's theme is “Raising the Bar.” During National FCCLA Week, members plan and carry out activities to address teen and societal concerns and show how Family and Consumer Sciences education can help them achieve the ultimate leadership experience. On January 23rd the mayor, Norberto Salinas, and City Council member, Maria Elena Ramirez, and the Mission City Council proclaimed “FCCLA week”, February 12-18, 2012 in the city of Mission.
In attendance representing Sharyland FCCLA were President Carlos Cruz, Oralia Chavez, Diana Garza, Marie E. Garza, Lorena Gonzalez, Brenda Guizar, Janell Hinojosa, Genoveva Jaimes, Alexis Montemayor, Karla Montemayor, Monica Muniz, and Carlos Valdez as well as advisors Mary Jo Brisnahan and Mary Jane Laing.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has over 195,000 members and over 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
